What HRV can—and can’t—tell you about sleep
Heart rate variability can add context to recovery and stress, but one number is not a diagnosis or a grade. Learn how to read trends without letting the tracker run your morning.

What the number represents
A healthy heart does not beat like a metronome. The interval between beats changes as the autonomic nervous system responds to breathing, activity, recovery, and stress. Wearables summarize those changes using metrics such as RMSSD, but brands may measure at different times and transform the result into proprietary scores.
That means two devices can tell different stories without either raw sensor being obviously broken. Compare like with like: the same device, similar conditions, and a trend long enough to rise above normal noise.
Read the pattern around the number
A lower-than-usual value after alcohol, a hard training day, travel, illness, or a short night may fit the surrounding context. A single dip with no symptoms may mean very little. A repeated shift combined with fatigue or illness is more useful information.
Rest Coach can use an HRV summary as one part of a conversation, but it should still ask what happened. The data narrows the question; it does not replace the person.
Avoid score-driven sleep anxiety
If checking a recovery score changes a decent morning into a bad one, delay the check. Start with a body check-in—energy, mood, soreness, and sleepiness—before opening the app. This protects your lived signal from being overwritten by a dashboard.
Wearables estimate rather than directly measure many sleep stages. They are useful for consistent trends, not for proving exactly what happened in every minute of the night.
What HRV cannot diagnose
HRV alone cannot diagnose sleep apnea, insomnia, an arrhythmia, overtraining, or a mental-health condition. New cardiac symptoms, fainting, chest pain, breathing concerns, or persistent severe fatigue require qualified medical care—not a coaching interpretation.

Is a higher HRV always better?+
No. HRV is highly individual and changes with context. A stable personal trend and the surrounding symptoms or behaviors matter more than chasing the highest possible number.
Can I compare HRV across Oura, Whoop, and Apple Health?+
Use caution. Devices may sample at different times and calculate or expose different metrics. Trends within one consistent measurement system are usually easier to interpret.
